Battle of Sullivan’s Island - The London Gazette (Rag) -08/24/1776
Fought June 28, 1776. Royal Naval forces, under the command of Sir Peter Parker, bombarded Sullivan’s Island with the intent of capturing Charleston Harbor . British land forces, led by Sir Henry Clinton, were unable to assist in the attack as they could not ford the channel dividing Long Island and Sullivan’s Island. Patriot forces won the day and Charleston remained open for American use until their defeat at the Battle of Charleston on August 12, 1780.
