Galveston Hurricane 1900

St Mary’s Orphan Asylum

Each, of ten Sisters, from the orphanage, operated by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, tied themselves with rope to 8 to 10 orphans. As they stood in the dormitory they sang an old French hymn, Queen of the Waves.

When the floor collapsed, with raging waters rising, each chain of Sister and orphans sank to their death. Each year, since 1900, on September 8th the Sisters of Charity, throughout the world, sing Queen of the Waves in honor of their 10 Sisters who died with 91 orphans during the Galveston Hurricane, which still stands as the worst natural disaster in American history.
